Finovate Favorites: A Baker’s Dozen of Best of Show Winners

Which fintech companies have continued to impress Finovate audiences over the years? The return of Kasasa to FinovateSpring last month, winning its fourth Best of Show award in the process, got a few of us thinking that it was a good time to take a look at which companies have been selected as fan favorites most frequently after demoing their latest technologies live on stage.

We’ve highlighted companies that have been especially popular at certain conferences, such as FinovateAsia and FinovateSpring before. Here is our compendium of the top Best of Show vote-getters to date for all shows combined (minimum of three wins).

The Big Three

The three companies that have won the most Best of Show awards from Finovate audiences reflect three different themes in fintech over the years: the allure of social investing (eToro), the rise of data analytics in banking (MX, formerly Money Desktop), and the persistence of the payment card (Dynamics). What is especially impressive about all three companies in our Best of Show Big Three is their ability to innovate over time. Each alum won their first Best of Show award between 2010 and 2012 and won their most recent Best of Show award between 2016 and 2018.

The Super Six

Of our Super Six – the six companies to have won Best of Show awards four times – what is most interesting is also the way many of them have been proven innovators over a time of major change in fintech. Companies like Kasasa (formerly BancVue) and Yodlee (now Envestnet | Yodlee) made their big splash back in the earliest days of Finovate and, with recent Best of Show wins in 2018 and 2017, respectively, shown that they are still among fintech’s most inspiring solution providers.

The Fantastic Four

Two of the companies in our Fantastic Four companies that have won Best of Show awards three times have since been acquired. LearnVest, a three-time Best of Show winner from 2011-2013, was acquired by Northwestern Mutual for more than $250 million in 2015. EyeVerify, which won Best of Show awards on three different continents, was acquired by Ant Financial in 2016. The company now operates as ZOLOZ, and is focused on providing digital identity solutions for the underbanked in Asia.

FinovateSpring 2018 Best of Show Winners Announced

The votes have been counted and the winners of our FinovateSpring 2018 Best of Show awards have been named. Congratulations to the five companies whose live demonstrations of their latest technologies wowed our attending crowd in Santa Clara, California this week.

Every Best of Show competition teaches us something about the state of fintech innovation in the world today. How are fintechs helping improve the customer experience in lending? How can financial institutions get a better understanding of their customers needs and preferences? How can we make it safer to bank and shop – to say nothing of simply communicate – safely online without fear of interference (or worse) from cybercriminals?

This year’s FinovateSpring 2018 Best of Show winners were no exception to this rule. The companies highlighted by our Best of Show awards reflect impressive innovations across the broad spectrum of financial technologies.

Conversation.one for its build-once-deploy-anywhere platform for conversational applications that enables FIs to build, deploy, and enhance their Alexa Skills, Google Home Actions, Facebook Messenger bots, and chatbots in one single process, in just a few minutes. Video.

Dynamics, Inc. for its network-approved “connected” payment card with a 65k pixel display, organic recharge, and telecommunications chip to facilitate wireless data downloads and customer notifications. Video.

Kasasa for its Kasasa Loan that lets borrowers pay ahead to reduce debt and take that extra money back if they need it. Kasasa Loans feature a mobile app that allows borrowers to manage their debt and access take-backs instantly. Video.

Trusona for its Trusona Executive solution that enables frictionless #NoPasswords multi-factor identity authentication at scale, including identity-proofing, step-up authentication using a person’s government-issued ID. Video.

Alpharank for its innovative Customer Graphs that leverage FIs’ anonymous transaction card data to help them understand how products and behaviors spread through customer networks and how to leverage network effects to their advantage. Video.

FinovateEurope 2018 Best of Show Winners Announced

If there is one theme that unites all of our FinovateEurope Best of Show winners this year, that theme may be summed up in one word: data. As Finovate senior research analyst Julie Muhn pointed out during a recent conversation, the ability to leverage data to create more meaningful, more personalized, more secure experiences for consumers of financial services underlies much of the innovation that we see not just on the Finovate stage, but across fintech writ large, as well.

In this way, financial technology is turning the old adage – it’s not what you know, it’s who you know – on its head. The connections between us and the things we do, the places we go, the transactions we make, are in many ways the Holy Grail for companies that are constantly seeking out better ways to serve us. FinovateMiddleEast Best of Show Winners Announced!

The votes have been counted and the winners of the first FinovateMiddleEast Best of Show competition have been selected.

Congratulations are due to all of the companies that presented their latest fintech innovations live on stage this week. From wealth management and lending to innovative approaches to making payments faster, more efficient, and more secure, what makes Finovate such a great opportunity for fintech professionals is the breadth and variety of technologies on display.

And while we love seeing which companies – new or old, local or global – are the ones that have developed solutions that capture the imagination of our knowledgeable fintech audience, we always maintain that the value of our Finovate demos lies in the diversity of approaches taken by different creative, insightful entrepreneurs and engineers solving real world problems for individuals, consumers, SMEs, corporations, and even governments all over the globe.

That said, there are always a handful of demos that stand out to our attendees – and these are the innovations we highlight with our Best of Show awards. So with no further ado, let’s take a look at the companies taking home Best of Show trophies for their demos this week at FinovateMiddleEast 2018 (in alphabetic order):

APPICS for its next-generation, rewards-based, social media app that enables people to connect with one another around the globe and leverages blockchain technology to turn social media “likes” into currency. Video.

Electronic IDentification for its VideoID solution which combines video streaming, advanced machine learning, and AI to remotely identify customers in seconds from any device and over any channel. Video.

Ondot Systems for its card control technology that empowers card holders to “remote control” their credit and debit cards from a smartphone app. Video.

Our first foray to the Middle East has been a huge success for us. We’ve both seen and learned a great deal about the kind of fintech innovations that are making it easier for those living in the MENA region to have safer, more transparent, and – hopefully – more prosperous financial lives.

FinovateAsia 2017 Best of Show Winners Announced

FinovateAsia 2017 is in the books. And after two days of live fintech demos from 32 innovative companies from around the world, our Finovate attendees have made their preferences known as to which companies should win Best of Show trophies.

One of the most interesting aspects of our Best of Show awards is how they provide an insight into which technologies are truly being put to work to solve real-world financial problems for financial institutions, merchants, and consumers alike. Whether the challenge is making payments safer and easier, helping individuals and families meet their financial goals, or fighting fraud and cybercrime, the companies that earn Best of Show at Finovate conferences are the ones that have shown our attendees that they have the solutions that the rest of the competition is still searching for.

This is why it is no surprise that so many of the companies that have earned the title of Best of Show have made such a significant impact in fintech – either as an emerging industry leader in their chosen field or as the sought-after acquisition from a larger firm eager to leverage a specific set of skills to broaden their own ability to serve a wider range of customers.

So with no further ado, let’s take a look at the award winners for Best of Show at FinovateAsia 2017 (in alphabetic order):

FinovateFall 2017 Best of Show Winners Announced

Join us in a hearty congratulations for the seven companies that earned not just the admiration of our FinovateFall 2017 attendees, but their votes for Best of Show, as well.

With more than 70 companies demonstrating their technologies live on stage over the course of two days, some diversity in theme and topic is to be expected. What is especially interesting about our Best of Show winners this time around is that, while numbering only seven, these innovators still reflect a wide variety of approaches toward solving some of the most vexing challenges in our financial lives. These are the technologies that we increasingly turn to for help when it comes to saving and investing for the future, working better and more efficiently with our banks and credit unions, and safeguarding our property, our financial transactions, and even our identities against fraudsters, hackers, and other malevolent actors.

Voleo for its social trading app that makes it easy for people to invest together, saving time and money, while simultaneously leveraging the collective wisdom of networked investors to pursue market-beating returns.

Do the Best of Show winners of FinovateSpring 2017 represent our most diverse array of fintech innovations to date?

You be the judge. This year’s winners include four companies that made their Finovate debuts this year, as well as a pair of companies – Hedgeable and SaleMove – that are not only Finovate veterans, but also are previous Best of Show award winners. And when we focus on the technologies involved: artificial intelligence, automated financial advisory, OCR, machine learning, biometrics, and more, it is clear that the innovations we see on the Finovate stage are indicative of broader trends not just in fintech, but in the technology industry as a whole.

After two days of live demonstrations of some of the most novel innovations in fintech, our FinovateEurope audience has made its voice heard as to which technologies represent the Best of Show.

This year’s award winners are a fascinating mix of Finovate veterans like Backbase, eToro, SaleMove, and Tink, all of whom have been honored with Best of Show trophies in the past, as well as newcomers like Dorsum and Memento, which accompanied their Finovate debuts with Best of Show awards of their own. And how fun is it to celebrate a company like CREALOGIX, a Finovate alum since 2011, that picked up its very first Best of Show honors this week?

A hearty congratulations to all seven of FinovateEurope 2017’s Best of Show winners – and to all of the companies that demonstrated their technologies at our London conference this year. FinovateAsia 2016 “Best of Show” Winners Announced

The votes are in and the Best of Show winners of FinovateAsia 2016 have been announced. Thanks to all 36 companies that demoed in Hong Kong this week and a hearty congratulations to the four audience favorites.

The winners are as diverse as the financial technologies they represent. Whether providing merchants with a broader range of payment options via the cloud, or extending the boundaries of what a piece of plastic can do to make commerce better for consumers and card issuers alike, the Best of Show winners reflect an industry that is as interested in making positive incremental change as it is in dazzling us with the latest innovations in biometric authentication and chatbot technology.

Here are the Best of Show winners of FinovateAsia 2016 (in alphabetical order):

Alpha Payments Cloud for its new joint venture with Australia Post that will bring a variety of innovative payment options to online merchants in Australia.

Dynamics for its continued re-invention of the payment card to make multicurrency transactions easier and more efficient for cardholders and merchants, while at the same time delivering significant savings to issuing banks.

EyeVerify whose innovations in biometric authentication technology are a part of the company’s larger initiative to develop a global identity management platform that provides better security for businesses and consumers.

Finn.ai for its white-label, virtual banking assistant that uses natural conversational language to help consumers manage their finances wherever they are.

The Best of Show winners of FinovateFall 2016 are a compelling tribute to the diversity of our industry. From new strategies that help financial institutions leverage their data to provide better services, to platforms that transform the gift card from a present-of-last-resort to the perfect gift, to a multifaceted identity-solution capable of securing everything from your email account to SWIFT wires, it is an exciting time to be a part of this dynamic fusion of finance and technology.

And while we give due credit to those demos that drew the most enthusiastic praise from our record-breaking FinovateFall audience, know that our Best of Show winners represent the tip of the spear, the vanguard of a movement whose innovations will shape the way we save, spend, invest, and engage the financial world for years to come.

Here are our Best of Show award winners for FinovateFall 2016 (in alphabetic order):

AutoGravity for its app that harnesses the power of the smartphone to enable users to take control of the automobile buying and financing experience.

Backbase for its omnichannel banking platform that leverages optical character recognition and facial recognition to deliver 60-second onboarding.

Clinc for its personal assistant for mobile banking, “Finie,” that uses advanced artificial intelligence and deep learning to communicate with users in natural, conversational language.

MX for its innovative technology that enables FIs to acquire new data, as well as better and more effortlessly understand and analyze the data they already have.

Swych for its mobile gifting platform that makes it easy for users to buy, send, upload, redeem, and exchange gift cards instantly and conveniently from their mobile devices.

Trusona for its insured cloud identity suite with offerings that run the gamut from securing everyday logins to protecting the world’s most sensitive assets.

FinovateSpring 2016 Best of Show Winners Announced

Heading into FinovateSpring 2016, we knew that one of the big themes would be the use of video for everything from authentication to improving customer engagement. And it seems like the hundreds of votes cast in our FinovateSpring 2016 Best of Show awards saw it the same way. Of the six Best of Show trophies awarded on Wednesday afternoon, two went to companies—SaleMove and Silver6—that are helping to make visual technology a bigger part of fintech innovation.

In fact, the more we think about it, the more we see how Best of Show award winner Quid—with its interactive maps that help businesses better navigate big data—is part of this larger trend toward leveraging the visual. Whether to better connect customers and clients with merchants and advisers, or to help make data more accessible and actionable, when it comes to fintech innovation, the “eyes” have it.

Our Best of Show voters were also impressed by the way innovators are using technology to solve the challenges of refugee populations and the underbanked (BanQu); the cash-flow struggles of working families (PayActiv); and even to help middle-class investors better track their finances across peer lending platforms (LendingRobot). This year’s Best of Show vote is real testament to both the diversity and social engagement that defines fintech in 2016. And truth told, it is a beautiful thing to see.

So let’s take a closer look at the award winners for Best of Show at FinovateSpring 2016 (in alphabetic order):

BanQu for its blockchain-based identity platform that enables financial inclusion and empowers the underbanked to join the global economy.

LendingRobot for its dashboard that helps investors track investments across peer lending platforms like Lending Club and Prosper.

PayActiv for its real-world alternative to payday loans that gives workers access to earned but unpaid wages.

Quid for its web-based intelligence platform that leverages big data analytics, natural language processing, and network science to turn data searches into visual explorations.

SaleMove for its engagement platform that creates high-touch customer interactions using video, voice, and chat.

Silver6 for its financial video platform that enables businesses to use video personalization to provide custom communications.

FinovateEurope 2016 Best of Show Winners Announced

With winter winds whipping up white caps on the typically mild-mannered Thames, another FinovateEurope is officially in the books.

We could not be more grateful to all those who demonstrated their latest fintech innovations live on stage in front of our record-setting audience here at Old Billingsgate Market Hall. After two days of demos, our attendees have weighed in on which technologies will earn the coveted title of Best of Show.
